Re:       Meeting Schedule and Agendas

1.     Next week’s meeting schedule and agendas are attached.  Remember that the Myrtle Beach Fire Department’s annual Fire Prevention Expo and Open House is tomorrow (Saturday, October 14) at Fire Station No. 3, at the intersection of South Kings Highway and Harrelson Boulevard.  This is a new location for this very kid-friendly event.

2.     The Myrtle Beach City Council this week endorsed a plan to add 70 new police positions during the next seven years.  Details of the plan, presented by Police Chief Amy Prock, are available online at www.cityofmyrtlebeach.com/PolicePlan.pdf.

3.     We welcome the eighth annual Myrtle Beach Mini Marathon on Sunday, October 22.  The 13.1 mile race begins at 7:00 a.m. at Coastal Grand Mall and ends at Plyler Park on the Boardwalk.  Some 5,000 runners are expected to participate in race activities, which include a two-day health and fitness expo, the Coastal 5K and a one-mile Doggie Dash.  For a map of the Sunday half-marathon race course, along with estimated times when intersections will be closed, visit www.cityofmyrtlebeach.com/mbminicoursemap.jpg.  Please plan ahead for travel next Sunday morning and remember that the race does not affect US 17.

4.     City and county police officers and firefighters take to the field next Sunday afternoon for some friendly competition in the annual Guns ’n Hoses Softball Tournament.  This year, the contest moves to TicketReturn.Com Field, home of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.  Tickets are a $5.00 donation to Project Lifesaver, a search and rescue tracking program for at-risk individuals (persons with Alzheimer’s, autism, Down syndrome, dementia and other cognitive conditions) who are prone to wandering.  Game One starts at 4:00 p.m. with the Myrtle Beach Fire Department and the Horry County Fire Department squaring off.  Game Two, between the police departments, starts at 5:00 p.m.  Then the winners of the two games play at 6:00 p.m. for this year’s title.  It’s fun for the entire family, with entertainment for kids, snacks and drinks.  For tickets, contact Tommy Chestnut at 843-918-1330 or 843-450-3241.  Tickets also are available at the Myrtle Beach Fire Department administrative offices and at the gate on Sunday.

5.     The Myrtle Beach Convention Center hosted South Carolina’s Largest Garage Sale last weekend, and that’s the subject of our Photos of the Week.  Thousands of people shopped for treasures and bargains among the 300 vendor booths.  This was the 29th annual sale.  For photos, visit www.cityofmyrtlebeach.com/pow.html.

6.     Did you know…  That the City of Myrtle Beach recently purchased a year’s supply of dog waste pick-up bags for $17,167?  That’s 630,000 disposable bags at less than three cents per bag.  The city provides free dog waste pick-up bags at the two off-leash Barc Parcs and other outdoor public areas where dogs are allowed.  City code requires dog owners to pick up after their pets whenever they are off the owner’s property and to properly dispose of the waste.  Failure to do so is a misdemeanor, subject to a fine of up to $500 and/or 30 days in jail.  Pick up after your pet!  It’s the law.
